UGC hosts an on-going educational series where neighbors teach neighbors.  Gatherings are meant to be informal and communal in spirit – allowing friends and family to hobnob and learn from one another.  Folks from the community will gather once a month on a Friday evening.

This series is also inspired after the publications and school portraying the simple, self-sufficient culture of southern Appalachia known as Foxfire in Rabun County, GA and loosely based upon an educational program – Second Saturdays – at the Jones Valley Urban Farm in Birmingham, AL.

The Urban Gardening Coalition has hosted on a variety of topics – including those listed below.  Please feel free to share your thoughts and ideas in the comments section at the bottom of this page!

  • Canning and preserving the garden harvest.
  • Planting with perennials.
  • Backyard chicken-raising
  • Baking bread.
  • Hide tanning.
  • Saving and storing seeds.
  • Knitting and crocheting.
  • Beekeeping.
  • Storytelling.
  • Midwifery.
  • Instrument making.
  • Waste vegetable oil and your diesel engine.
  • Eating seasonally and locally.
  • Herbs – culinary, cosmetic, and medicinal uses.
